Aesop Fables

1. The Lion and the Mouse

Once upon a time, a mighty lion was sleeping peacefully under a shady tree. A little mouse was running around nearby. By mistake, the mouse ran across the lion’s body and woke him up.

The angry lion quickly caught the mouse in his huge paw. “How dare you disturb my sleep?” he roared.

The frightened mouse begged, “Please let me go, great lion. I promise that someday I may be able to help you.”

The lion laughed at the idea of such a tiny creature helping him. However, he was feeling generous, so he released the mouse.

A few days later, the lion was caught in a hunter’s net. He struggled and roared, but he could not escape.

Hearing the lion’s cries, the little mouse came running. Remembering the lion’s kindness, the mouse began chewing the ropes with his sharp teeth. Soon, the net was broken, and the lion was free.

The lion thanked the mouse and realized that even the smallest friend can be a great help.

Moral:  No act of kindness is ever wasted.

2. The Tortoise and the Hare

A hare was very proud of how fast he could run. He often laughed at a slow-moving tortoise.

“You are so slow! You could never beat me in a race,” the hare teased.

The tortoise calmly replied, “Perhaps I am slow, but I can still race you.”

The hare laughed but agreed to the challenge. Soon the race began. The hare quickly ran far ahead and was soon out of sight.

Feeling confident, he thought, “The tortoise is so far behind. I have plenty of time to rest.”

The hare lay down under a tree and soon fell asleep.

Meanwhile, the tortoise continued walking slowly but steadily. He never stopped and never gave up.

While the hare slept, the tortoise passed him and continued toward the finish line.

When the hare finally woke up, he ran as fast as he could, but it was too late. The tortoise had already crossed the finish line.

Moral: Slow and steady wins the race.

3. The Boy Who Cried Wolf

A young shepherd boy looked after a flock of sheep near a village. One day, he became bored and decided to play a trick on the villagers.

He shouted loudly, “Wolf! Wolf! A wolf is attacking the sheep!”

The villagers heard his cries and rushed to help him. But when they arrived, there was no wolf.

The boy laughed and said, “I fooled you!”

A few days later, he played the same trick again. Once more, the villagers came running, only to discover that there was no wolf.

The villagers became angry and stopped trusting the boy.

One evening, a real wolf appeared and attacked the sheep. The frightened boy shouted, “Wolf! Wolf! Please help me!”

But this time, nobody came.

The villagers thought he was lying again. The wolf scattered the sheep, and the boy learned a painful lesson.

Moral: A liar will not be believed, even when telling the truth.

4. The Fox and the Grapes

One hot afternoon, a hungry fox was walking through the forest. Suddenly, he noticed a beautiful bunch of ripe grapes hanging from a high vine.

The grapes looked delicious. The fox jumped and tried to reach them, but they were too high.

He stepped back and jumped again. Still, he could not reach them.

The fox tried several more times. He ran, jumped, stretched, and even tried approaching the grapes from different directions. But every attempt failed.

Finally, the tired fox gave up.

As he walked away, he looked back at the grapes and said, “I am sure those grapes were sour anyway. They probably weren't worth eating.”

The fox walked away pretending that he had never wanted the grapes.

Moral: It is easy to despise what we cannot have.

5. The Ant and the Grasshopper

During the warm summer months, a hardworking ant spent his days collecting food and storing it carefully for winter.

Nearby, a cheerful grasshopper spent his days singing, dancing, and enjoying the sunshine.

“Why are you working so hard?” the grasshopper asked. “Come and enjoy the summer with me!”

The ant replied, “Winter will come soon. I must prepare food while I have the chance.”

The grasshopper laughed and continued playing.

Soon, summer ended and cold winter arrived. The fields became covered with frost, and food became difficult to find.

The hungry grasshopper searched everywhere but found almost nothing to eat. He remembered the hardworking ant and went to ask for help.

The ant had enough food because he had prepared during the summer.

The grasshopper realized that enjoying life is important, but preparation for the future is important too.

Moral: Work hard today and prepare for tomorrow.
